Mussolini was overthrown in a coup in July 1943 and the new Italian leader decided to surrender to the Allies. In light of this Hitler ordered his Fallschirmjäger to go to Rome as quickly as possible. Within two days the 2nd FJ Division was in Rome to disarm the Italian forces and stabilize the situation.
