Carthaginian Quinquereme
Carthage had a fleet of some 130 vessels, the backbone of which was the Quinquereme. They were powered by two banks of oars or, if weather permitted when not in action, by two sails. The sails were lowered for battle when the strength of the vessel's oarsmen and her bronze ram became her main arament.

This model is available with set sails (brass) or furled sails (white metal). Fittings, including some figures, are in white metal.

Roman Quinquereme
The Roman Quinquereme had one sail (sometimes two) as well as three banks of oars. They were armed with a bronze ram, had 270 oarsmen and between 40 and 120 marines.

Our model has a raised bow with wolf's head decoration; it also has a stern fighting platform. It is available with set sail (brass) or furled sail (white metal). Fittings, including some figures, are in white metal.

Roman Quinquereme with Corvus
Roman seamanship was vastly inferior to Carthaginian. In consequence, the Romans developed the Corvus or Raven, a spiked boarding plank 24ft long which could be dropped onto an enemy's deck, locking the two ships together - thus negating naval tactics.

As well as being supplied with a corvus, this model differs from the above in the bow and stern detail.. It is available with set sail (brass) or furled sail (white metal). Fittings, including some figures, are in white metal.

Roman Deceres
This was one of the larger vessels used in the fleets of antiquity. It had a complement of 572 rowers and up to 250 marines. The vessel was armed with two fighting towers and between 2 to 6 catapults, one of which might be used to fire a harpago. The harpago was a harpoon-like grapnel which was used to reel in a victim and was far more effective than the older corvus.

Our model  is available with furled sail (white metal) only.  Fittings, including  two towers, two catapults and some figures, are in white metal.

Roman Libernian
One of the smallest of Rome's fighting ships, these vessels were used in the second line of battle where size was not of paramount importance. Being smaller and with only two banks of oars, their cost was considerably less than the heavier quinquereme.

Our model includes blocks of oarsmen and two steering crew.

Merchant Vessel
These broad rounded vessels were used extensively by all maritime powers during the Ancient period. They had no oars and were powered by a large main sail and a boat sail.

Our model has two brass photo etched set sails; the white metal fittings include an officer's accommodation.

The Trireme was a fast. light and highly efficient warship and is the best known of all the classical types.

The earlier triremes were of the aphract design, that is, with the oarsmen unprotected. Later, they were partially protected by light decking and hide screens. Eventually, the design evolved to provide the oarsmen with cover from missile fire - from above and on the sides - the style being known as 'cataphract'.

Langton Miniatures offer three Trireme model kits - the styles covering different periods in the history of this vessel. The hull and deck are separate castings, so that the oarsmen can first be painted, then positioned on the inside of the vessel. This gives a very realistic effect.

The description of the contents follow, however, should customers so wish, there are options with regards to stern and bow detail. This will allow modellers to construct a number of vessels, each having their own individual look. There is no charge for opting to deviate from our selection.

Brass photo etched detail common to all three kits are the outriggers, ladders, steering oars and oarbanks. Sails and fittings are in white metal. Detailed instructions/diagrams are included.

LAN5 Aphract (Early) Trireme
The resin hull for this early model has some oarsmen moulded in the centre of the casting. The white metal fittings include more oarsmen on strips, main and fore mast, main and boat sail (open).

LAN6 Aphract (Later) Trireme
The resin deck for this later aphract model has an open centre line which would be similar to the vessels at the time of Salamis. The white metal fittings include oarsmen on strips, main and fore mast, main and fore sail (furled).

LAN7 Semi-Cataphract Trireme
This model provides full deck cover for the oarsmen, but is open at the sides. The white metal fittings include oarsmen on strips, main and fore mast, main and fore sail (open). This type was very likely favoured by the Persian forces at Salamis.
