Yorktown Class
Aircraft Carrier
CV 5 USS Yorktown
$950.00
Commissioned
in 1937 Yorktown was the lead ship of a class of 3 Aircraft Carriers built for
the US Navy. Yorktown led a distinguished – although short career fighting the
Japanese in the Pacific. She fought in the first major carrier battle of Pacific
War: The battle of the Coral Sea where she was badly damage by Japanese
Aircraft.
Yorktown went to Pearl Harbor for quick repairs and joined the battle fleet in
time for the decisive Battle of Midway in June 1942. During this battle Yorktown
took three bomb hits and two torpedoes which severely damaged her yet again.
Salvage crews managed to keep her from sinking and almost had her ready to be
towed back to Pearl Harbor when 2 torpedoes from Japanese Submarine I-158
finally sealed her fate. Yorktown capsized and sank on June 7th 1942
in very deep water west of Midway Island.
In 1998 Robert Ballard found and photographed Yorktown and she was found to be
in very good condition considering the amount of damage she took by the Japanese
and a 15,000-foot plunge to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.
While
not for the novice, this kit will take time to build in order to display her in
all her glory. The kit features a 2
foot 4 inch long hull. The hull is split at the waterline to allow full hull or
waterline model construction. The kit has a complete and detailed hanger bay.
All platforms are reproduced in exact 1/350 scale. The kit has a solid
photo-etched brass flight deck. The engraved deck with all the tie downs
reproduced is excellent. Four sheets of photo-etched brass parts are included
with over 1200 parts. 16 aircraft are included in this kit.
All planes have brass propellers and landing gear. All small parts are
made of Pewter.
