USS Hornet

Yorktown Class
Aircraft Carrier
CV 8 USS Hornet
$950.00
Commissioned in November, 1941 and younger sister to both Yorktown and Enterprise, USS Hornet had a short, yet distinguished operational career. In early 1942, when the Japanese juggernaut seemed all but unstoppable, a plan was under development to stage a raid on the Japanese capital, Tokyo. A conventional carrier strike would have been suicide, but the Japanese High Command would never expect an attack by land-based aircraft. The plan called for 16 B-25B's to be launched from the deck of a carrier, attack their Japanese targets and then proceed to friendly territory on the Chinese mainland. The Hornet was chosen for this task, and launched "Doolittle Raiders" on April 18, 1942. This one event started a series of events culminating in the Battle of Midway.
While not for the novice, this kit will take time to build in order to display her in all her glory. The kit features a 2 foot 4 inch long hull. The hull is split at the waterline to allow full hull or waterline model construction. The kit has a complete and detailed hanger bay. All platforms are reproduced in exact 1/350 scale. The kit has a solid photo-etched brass flight deck. The engraved deck with all the tie downs reproduced is excellent. Four sheets of photo-etched brass parts are included with over 1200 parts. 16 aircraft are included in this kit. You get 16 B-25B bombers. All planes have brass propellers and landing gear. All small parts are made of Pewter.
